The importance of men’s mental health: Breaking the silence



International Men’s Day, which takes place on 19 November, provides a timely reminder of the need to shine a light on a topic often neglected – men’s mental health.

While mental health challenges undoubtedly impact everyone, men frequently face unique barriers in recognising and seeking help for their struggles. Societal expectations of masculinity – the pressure to be strong, self-reliant, and emotionally reserved – contribute to a damaging stigma around mental health issues in men.

This silence can have devastating effects, as reflected in suicide statistics. 

Figures from the World Health Organisation (WHO) show men account for approximately 75% of suicide victims worldwide, a tragically high number that is mirrored in the UK by the Office of National Statistics (ONS), with mental health problems like depression, anxiety, and stress often going unaddressed. 

One key reason for this alarming trend is that men are less likely than women to seek professional help for mental health issues. Many men fear being perceived as weak or incapable if they admit they’re struggling, which only deepens the isolation.

International Men’s Day encourages a conversation around vulnerability, making it clear that mental health struggles are very much a human experience, not a weakness.

Speaking up 

Breaking the silence is essential. Creating supportive environments where men feel safe to open up is a crucial first step.
